Privacy Policy

1. Who is responsible

The site is published by Ruwix Services SRL, a company registered in Romania, [registered address], registration number [company registration number]. For anything about your data, write to [email address]. Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Ruwix Services SRL is the controller for the processing described in sections 3 and 4, and the companies named in section 5 are controllers for their own processing.

2. The short version

• You do not register, log in or fill in a form. There is nothing to store about you and no database to store it in.
• The site does not set cookies or write anything to your browser. What you type in the date fields only changes the address of the page you are on.
• Like every website, our servers and Cloudflare, which delivers the pages, keep short-lived technical logs.
• Google Analytics measures visits and Google AdSense shows the ads that pay for the site. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, both wait for your choice in the consent banner.
• Videos in the music panel come from YouTube and load only when you press play.

3. How the site works

Every page of DatesBack is built on the fly from data files: the people, events, charts, news and year write-ups are plain text files that a script turns into a page. There is no user database, no account system and no comment section. The year and date fields in the header are navigation: they open the page of the date you type, and nothing you type is kept. The site does not use cookies, local storage or any other browser storage of its own.

4. Technical logs

When your browser requests a page, the request passes through Cloudflare, a content delivery network, to the server of our hosting provider. Both keep standard web server logs: your IP address, the address requested, the time, the browser and device type, and the page you came from. We use these logs, if at all, to keep the site running and to stop abuse, for example a script hammering the server. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a working, secure website (GDPR article 6(1)(f)). The logs are kept for a limited time set by the hosting provider and by Cloudflare, and then deleted. We do not use them to identify visitors.

Cloudflare may set a cookie of its own on some visits, for its bot protection. It is described in Cloudflare's privacy policy.

5. Third parties on the page

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to learn which pages are read and how visitors move between them: pages viewed, time on page, approximate location derived from the IP address, browser and device type, and the site you came from. Google processes this on our behalf and on its own terms. Where the law requires it, Analytics runs only after you agree in the consent banner, and with "consent mode" it sends no identifiers before that. You can also block it with Google's opt-out add-on. Advertising

The site is free and carries ads served by Google AdSense, and at times by other ad networks. Ad networks may use cookies and similar identifiers to show ads that fit your interests and to count how often an ad was seen. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland a consent banner, provided by a consent management platform, asks for your choice before any advertising cookie is set; you can accept, refuse, or choose per purpose, and change your mind later through the banner's link. If you refuse, you still see ads, but not personalised ones. Google lists its advertising partners and their policies on its ad technology providers page, and you can manage ad personalisation in your Google ad settings. Some panels also show our own house ads for other sites we run; those set nothing.

YouTube

The music panel plays the top songs of the month as YouTube videos. The video player is loaded from YouTube only when you press a song; until then no request goes to YouTube. Once it loads, YouTube and Google may set their own cookies and record that you watched, as described in Google's privacy policy.

Fonts and scripts

The pages use the Source Sans Pro typeface served by Google Fonts and the jQuery library served by the jQuery CDN. Your browser fetches those files from their servers, which see your IP address in the process, as any file download does. Neither sets cookies.

Links

Many names on the pages link to Wikipedia, YouTube, film databases and other sites. Once you follow a link, the other site's own policy applies.

6. The countdown counters

Pages for future dates offer a countdown that other websites can embed. When you visit such a site, your browser fetches the counter from datesback.com, and the technical logs of section 4 apply to that request in the same way. The counter itself contains no tracking beyond that.

7. Transfers outside the EEA

Google and Cloudflare are based in the United States and process data there and elsewhere. They rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses for those transfers. Details are in their own policies, linked above.

8. Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask us what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to its processing, receive it in a portable form, and withdraw any consent you gave. Because DatesBack keeps no personal data of its own, most requests will end with the technical logs of section 4, and with the third parties, where the links above lead to their own tools. Write to [email address] and we will answer within a month. You may also complain to the Romanian data protection authority, the ANSPDCP, or to the authority of the country you live in.

9. Children

DatesBack is a general reference site and is safe for all ages. We do not knowingly collect data from children; we do not collect data from anyone. Ads shown to visitors in the EEA and the UK who have not consented are not personalised.

10. Changes

If the site starts doing something new with data, this page changes first and the date at the top moves. Small wording fixes are made without notice.
