About

A page for every date in history

DatesBack is a small team of historians and programmers who wanted one place that answers a simple question: what was going on in the world on this date? We started building it in 2020 and launched it in 2026.

What you will find here

Type any date, and DatesBack turns it into a page of its own. A day page tells you who was born and who died that day, what happened, how long ago it was, and the weekday, the moon phase and the position of the year. A month page adds the ten biggest songs and films of that month and a front page of the month's news. A year page puts the whole year together: what things cost, how people lived, the events of the year with their dates, and a picture of the year for every year since 1827.

The world map ties it all to the ground. It is drawn from 1,582 snapshots of the world's political borders, one for every year they changed, from 4000 BC to today, and it moves along a timeline you can drag. Under the map the year panels follow along and explain who held what, who fought whom, and what moved on the map that year.

Dates before the year 1 work too. Put a minus in front of the year, or spell it out as 500 BC, and the same pages open on the ancient world.

2,367years written up
1,582map snapshots
921months of music, films and news
6,026years, end to end

Who we are

We are historians who like code and programmers who like history, based in Romania. The historians choose what goes on a page and check the dates against the sources; the programmers built the site, the map and the tools that keep 2,367 year files consistent. DatesBack is published by Ruwix Services SRL.

How the pages are written

Six years in the making

The first version, in 2020, was a birthday toy: a page that counted the days since a date and listed a few people born on it. The month charts came next, then the film lists and the news front pages, then the year pages with their pictures. The world map took the longest: 1,582 border snapshots had to be drawn, labelled and dated before the timeline could run. The year write-ups for the ancient world, one for every snapshot before the year 1, were the last piece, and with them DatesBack launched in 2026.

History is full of dates that two good books give differently, and we do make mistakes. If a page has something wrong on it, write to us at [email address] with the address of the page and what should change. Corrections are the most useful mail we get.
