Paris spent the summer showing off. The exhibition on the Champ de Mars filled a huge oval hall with machines, and visiting kings and sultans queued to see them. Outside, young men were wobbling around on the newest toy in the city, a wooden velocipede with pedals bolted to the front wheel. It had iron tyres and no brakes worth the name, and riders called it the boneshaker. Within two years the craze had reached New York, London and Sydney.
