Cholera came back that summer. In the east end of London it killed thousands in a few weeks, and the water company that served those streets was blamed for pumping unfiltered river water into the pipes. In Germany a Swedish chemist found that nitroglycerin soaked into a chalky earth could be carried in a cart without blowing up. He called it dynamite, and tunnel builders bought all he could make. Generals were learning their own new trick, moving whole armies by rail.
