Caesar's last battle is fought at Munda in southern Spain in March against Pompey's sons. It is the hardest of his career; he says afterwards that he had often fought for victory but this time for his life. Gnaeus Pompey is hunted down and killed, Sextus escapes. Caesar comes home dictator for ten years, plans a Parthian war, and in September writes the will that adopts his great-nephew Octavian. On the map Rome's settlement of Africa shows: Bocchus II of Mauretania, who backed Caesar, gets the western part of Numidia, and his colour grows east. The rest of the map is still. Cleopatra remains in Rome. Emperor Yuan reigns in China, Huhanye's Xiongnu keep the peace with Han, and Azes rules the Punjab.

From 46 BC to 45 BC

On the map Mauretania grows east this year into western Numidia, the reward Bocchus II gets for taking Caesar's side in Africa. Rome's colour gives up that strip and keeps the rest of Juba's old kingdom.
