Life back then

A picture from 1944

Word from the fighting arrived as a radio bulletin, then a week later as a newsreel before the feature film. Families kept a map of France on the kitchen wall and moved pins as announcers read out the names of towns. In London people learned to listen for the buzz of a flying bomb, because the danger came when the engine cut out. Letters between soldiers and home were photographed, shipped as film and printed small to save cargo space, a system called V-mail. Night shifts ran at aircraft plants and shipyards, and a lot of those shifts were worked by women.
