The Oxford English Dictionary took 70 years to finish. A baby born the year work started would have been drawing a pension by the time the last section came off the press.

Life back then

Dance halls filled up for the Charleston and the Black Bottom, and bands played the same tunes in Berlin and Buenos Aires. Radio was moving out of the back bedroom, where one person listened through headphones on a crystal set, and into a living room cabinet the whole family could hear. In Turkey grown ups went back to class to learn a new alphabet, because the old script was dropped almost overnight. In November a cartoon mouse whistled at the wheel of a steamboat, and audiences had never seen a cartoon move in step with its own sound.

• 🐭Nov 18 Steamboat Willie opens in New York and Mickey Mouse makes his official debut.
