Twenty dog teams passed a package of diphtheria medicine 674 miles across Alaska in five and a half days. That is roughly the distance from New York to Chicago, run in relays through a blizzard.

Life back then

Dance floors filled up with the Charleston, a fast kicking step that older people called a danger to the floorboards. Films were silent, so a piano player or a small band sat below the screen and played along with the story. Radio was still rare enough that neighbours crowded into the house of whoever owned a set when a big fight or a speech was on. In Britain a set was not enough on its own, because every listener had to buy a yearly licence from the post office before switching it on.
