Two Army planes needed 175 days to fly around the world, stopping dozens of times on the way. A passenger jet now covers that distance in about two days of flying.

Life back then

Radio stopped being a hobby and became furniture. Sets with a horn speaker let a whole family listen at once, instead of passing one pair of headphones around the table. A new Ford Model T runabout cost $265, cheap enough for a factory worker to save for, and town streets filled with cars that still shared the road with horse carts. The craze of the year was crossword puzzles, after a new publisher printed the first book of them. About half of American homes had electric light, and the other half still lit lamps at dusk.
