The World in 1913 the year the line started moving

A new Model T cost about $600 and the average worker earned around $650 in a whole year. Buying a car meant handing over almost everything you made in twelve months.

Life back then

Families made their own music. A piano stood in the front room of millions of houses, and people bought printed sheet music the way later generations bought records. Publishers along New York's Tin Pan Alley paid singers to plug new songs in department stores until shoppers went home humming them. Ragtime was what the young wanted to play, with its steady left hand and a melody that landed off the beat. A hit sold a million copies as paper, and older relatives grumbled that it was far too noisy.

• 📜Aug 10 The Treaty of Bucharest ends the Second Balkan War. Bulgaria gives back most of what it won the year before.
• 🚗Dec 1 Ford starts a moving assembly line at its Highland Park plant near Detroit and builds cars in a fraction of the time.
• 💵Dec 23 President Wilson signs the law creating the Federal Reserve, a central bank for the United States.
