What DatesBack does
Learn what was going on in the World on the date of your birth or any other date in history. DatesBack turns any calendar date into its own page with interactive interface. Type the date into the address bar, or pick one from the bar at the top. You get the famous birthdays, the events, the current music toplists, the films that belong to that day and many more.

The pages are divided into tematic panels:
The logo
The logo is drawn in the style of the decade or era you selected. There is one for every decade from the 1900s to the 2020s, one for each century before that, and a separate one for BC dates. That is 32+ logos, and the page picks the one that fits the year.
The date panel
The first panel shows the intro with the selected date and counts the days since it. Below that sit the weekday, the week number, a bar showing how far into the year the day falls, the moon phase that night and a rough count of how many people were alive.
About the day
A short piece about the calendar day itself rather than the year: Wheather it's an International Day of some kind or a major holiday. August 19 is World Humanitarian Day, for instance, so that page explains what the day marks exactly.
Top 10 Music
The ten biggest hits of that month is selected carefully to include not just the Bilboard top 10 but a balanced mix of USA-Europe-Global hits. Play any videoclip without leaving DatesBack.*
Best Movies
The ten blockbusters of the month. The top film gets its poster, and every title carries links to its trailer, TMDB, Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb for easy search. Films start in 1950 as well.*
The Monthly Chronicle
The most important news stories from that month, laid out as a newspaper front page with the month printed under the masthead. The most impactful mix of USA and global headlines.*
* The music, movie and news lists are updated at the end of each month and the current months show the previous month's data.
Events of the day
Things that happened on that calendar day in other years, oldest first. Every year badge is a link, so August 19 in the year 14 is one click from August 19 in 1977.
Born on this date
Treats the date as a birthday. It works out the age in years, months and days, then gives the star sign, the Chinese zodiac animal and the name of the generation.
Famous Birthdays
People born that day, most recent first with a brief presentation. Click the portrait of the featured avatar and the page jumps to that person's row.
Famous Deaths
The same idea for people who died that day, set on a headstone. Names link out to their Wikipedia page to learn more about them.
About the current year
A time capsule for the whole year: what things cost, a picture, a paragraph on daily life back then, and the year's main events. Each event date links to its own day page.
Who Was in Charge?
Up to 10 people (or dynasty) running things on that date, from the US president and the pope to the rulers of England, France, Germany, China, Japan, Rome, Byzantium and other empires.
Event timeline
The selected date sits in the middle of the timeline, marked as the selected date, with big moments of history placed before and after it to visualize in time.
Date Counter
For future dates a live counter appears above everything else, ticking down in days, hours, minutes and seconds. Embed this into your website or share it easily.
The year picker
On the home page you can see 12 decade cards to from the 1910s to the 2020s. Open one and it unfolds into its ten years, which is the quickest way to pick a year.

Finding a date
- The address bar is quickest. /1946/apr/12 is April 12, 1946. Month names are the first three letters.
- Leave off the day for a whole month, and the month too for a whole year: /1946/apr or /1946.
- The random date 🎲 button drops you on a random day between 1900 and today.
- Dates before year 1 work as well. Put a minus in front: /-44/mar/15 reads as March 15, 44 BC. Old dates are counted with today's calendar rules, which historians call the proleptic Gregorian calendar.
Counting down to a day that has not happened yet
Pick a date in the future and the page puts a live counter at the top. It ticks down in days, hours, minutes and seconds, and it says which weekday the date will land on.
⏳ The Share and Embed box on those pages hands you a line of code. Paste it into your own site and the same counter runs there.
Questions people ask
Is there a page for February 29?
Yes. Leap day has its own page like every other day, so a leap year birthday works the same as any other.
How do I jump straight to one exact date?
Type it after the site address as year, month, day. /2001/sep/11 takes you to September 11, 2001.
Can I look up a date before the year 1?
Yes. A minus sign in front of the year gives you a BC date. The page still works out the weekday and how many days have passed since.
What is the box right under the date?
It appears when something on the page lands on that exact date. If a famous person died that day, or a world event happened on it, the box repeats it at the top so you do not have to hunt for it. Clicking the box scrolls down to the full entry.
Can I share a single date?
Every date has its own web address, so the link is all you need. The Share and Embed box also has buttons for copying the link and for WhatsApp, X and Facebook.
