The World in 1996 the year Pokemon was born

Only about 36 million people used the internet in 1996, fewer than 1 in every 100 people on Earth. In a class of 30 kids, chances were that not one of them had ever been online.

Life back then

The web turned into something families tried after dinner, one slow page at a time, while Netscape and Microsoft fought over which browser people would use. Kids lined up for the new Nintendo 64, and in Japan a keychain pet called the Tamagotchi went on sale just before the holidays.
