The World in 1992 the year the first text was sent

The whole texting era began with one message in December. It said Merry Christmas, and the phone that received it had no way to type a reply.

Life back then

Home internet was rare and charged by the hour, so most families never tried it. In Europe, new digital phones started working from one country to the next, which is why sending a text became possible at all. MTV began The Real World in May and reality TV was born. Wayne's World filled cinemas, and the Sunday paper was still where you looked up movie times.
