The World in 1984 the year a computer said hello

About 1,000 computers were connected to the internet in 1984. That is fewer machines than there were students in a single large high school, and almost all of them sat in universities or military labs.

Life back then

Apple ran its Macintosh commercial once during the Super Bowl, and people argued about it for weeks. Telephones were still tied to the wall by a cord, so plans were made in advance and kids memorized their friends' numbers. In Britain whole mining towns lived on strike pay and food parcels for most of the year. In the autumn, television news from Ethiopia brought the famine into millions of living rooms. Breakdancing moved from street corners to shopping malls, and families spent evenings on Trivial Pursuit, which sold about 20 million copies that year.
