The World in 1976 the year a scoreboard could not show a ten

When Nadia Comaneci earned a perfect ten in Montreal, the scoreboard showed 1.00 instead. It had only three digits, because the people who built it never expected anyone to score a ten.

Life back then

American towns painted fire hydrants red, white and blue for the country's two hundredth birthday, and tall ships sailed into New York harbor on the Fourth of July. Drivers chatted to strangers on CB radio, picking a handle instead of using a name, and the slang leaked into hit songs. Home computers were still bare circuit boards ordered from magazine ads and soldered at the kitchen table. Britain baked through a rainless summer that dried the reservoirs, and by December punk bands were swearing on teatime television.
