The World in 1963 the year addresses got five extra digits

In November a volcano pushed a brand new island out of the sea off Iceland. Fishermen watched land appear where their charts showed nothing but open water.

Life back then

In July the Post Office asked everyone to stick five digits on the end of an address, and a cartoon mailman named Mr. ZIP explained the new ZIP Code from posters in every lobby. Milk still came to the door in glass bottles. Grocery shoppers saved trading stamps in booklets and cashed them in for a toaster or a lamp. In September the evening news on CBS grew from fifteen minutes to half an hour, which felt like a lot of news at the time.
