The World in 1952 the year jets started carrying passengers

The London smog lasted five days and killed about 4,000 people. Spread evenly, that is one death every two minutes, through every hour of those five days.

Life back then

British homes were heated by coal fires, and in December the smoke had nowhere to go. For five days a yellow smog sat on London so thickly that buses crawled behind men carrying lamps and washing came off the line gray. Tea was the last thing to come off ration that autumn, twelve years after the coupons began. Flying changed in May, when the first jet airliner took paying passengers and climbed above the rough weather. Parents watched their children for a limp or a headache all summer, because polio spread further that year than in any other. In America a four year freeze on new TV stations ended in April, and towns that never had a picture started getting one.
