Life back then

Money got tighter month by month, and shops fought hard for what people still had. Grocers started stacking goods on open shelves and letting shoppers fill their own baskets, an idea a New York store called King Kullen pushed hard that August. Bread turned up sliced in a wrapper in more and more towns, and a few Massachusetts stores put out cardboard packs of frozen peas and fish. Children hung around the radio for the adventure serials and read the first Nancy Drew mysteries, which came out that year.
