The World in 1910 the year the comet came calling

A ticket cost a nickel, and about 26 million Americans went to the pictures every week. That is close to one in four people in the country, sitting in small storefront theaters watching short films that changed every few days.

Life back then

School ended early for most children. Plenty finished after the eighth grade, at about fourteen, and went straight into a shop, a mill or the family farm. In the countryside one teacher handled every age at once in a one-room school, with older pupils helping the younger ones and a stove in the corner for winter. Lessons meant reciting out loud, writing on a slate and learning poems by heart. Few teenagers finished high school, and going to college was unusual enough to make the local paper.

• 🥊Jul 4 Jack Johnson beats Jim Jeffries in Reno to keep the world heavyweight title.
• 📜Aug 29 Japan announces that Korea is now part of its empire. Korean rule will not return for 35 years.
• 🗳️Oct 5 A revolt in Lisbon ends the Portuguese monarchy. The young king sails away and Portugal becomes a republic.
• ⚔️Nov 20 Francisco Madero calls Mexicans to rise against President Diaz, starting the Mexican Revolution.
