About 55,000 cars were registered in the whole United States. New York City alone kept more than twice that many horses at work in its streets.

Life back then

The horse still ran the city. Cabs, delivery wagons and the fire engine all needed one, so the streets smelled of stable and crews shoveled from dawn onward. In October New York opened the first line of its Interborough Rapid Transit subway, and a nickel took you from City Hall up to Harlem without seeing daylight. Outside the cities almost no road was paved, so a motor trip meant mud, punctures and a jug of gasoline strapped to the running board.
